Arrests Made After NIA Personnel Attacked During Transfer of Accused

Kolkata, India – The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in India made arrests following proper procedures, a spokesperson confirmed. The arrests came after an aggressive crowd allegedly assaulted NIA personnel escorting an accused individual to the police station for legal formalities, leading to injuries to one official and damage to an NIA vehicle. The agency filed a complaint at the local police station, seeking action against the attackers.

Manobrata Jana and Bailicharan Maity were arrested by the NIA on Saturday for their involvement in a case. The NIA stated that the duo had ignored repeated summons to cooperate with the investigation. A special NIA court in Kolkata, after reviewing the case, deemed the allegations very serious and authorized the agency to proceed with the investigation swiftly, including arrests and searches as necessary.

The investigation stemmed from a blast in December 2022, when the NIA took over the case on June 6, 2023, following orders from the Calcutta High Court. The recent attack on the NIA team drew comparisons to a previous incident in North 24 Parganas district, where an Enforcement Directorate team was assaulted during a search related to alleged irregularities in the public distribution system.

Senior Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh alleged on Sunday that a former TMC member, who is now a senior BJP figure, had provided a list of TMC leaders to be arrested by the NIA prior to the Lok Sabha elections. This claim further fuels the political tensions surrounding the arrests and investigations conducted by law enforcement agencies in India.

The NIA’s efforts to crack down on criminal activities continue, despite facing challenges such as attacks on personnel and allegations of political interference. The agency remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served in cases of national security importance. As the investigations unfold, the public eagerly awaits to see how these developments will impact the political landscape in West Bengal and beyond.
