Assault on Elderly Couple Sparks Outrage and Calls for Maximum Penalty

HONOLULU, HAWAII – Family members of an elderly couple who were attacked in Honolulu are demanding the maximum penalty for the suspect involved in the assault.

The incident, which took place on Friday, left loved ones of the victims distraught and calling for justice. As of late Saturday, it remains unclear whether an arrest has been made in connection to the case.

The 72-year-old female victim’s granddaughter, Mariah Schlegel, expressed not only shock and disturbance at the attack but also a profound sense of anger. Schlegel, who was thousands of miles away in Seattle at the time of the incident, received a disturbing video from her mother showing her grandmother being assaulted in an apartment parking garage on Kalakaua Avenue.

According to Schlegel, the assault transpired after her grandmother confronted a food delivery driver who was illegally parked in a spot. The altercation escalated, with the delivery driver knocking the elderly woman to the ground. Despite the attack, the elderly woman attempted to reach for the driver’s phone to call for help.

The situation took a more severe turn when the victim’s 65-year-old partner intervened, only to be targeted by the assailant as well. The attacker’s actions left the victims severely injured, with the woman being taken to the hospital in serious condition.

In response to the attack, State Rep. Adrian Tam, who represents the Ala Moana and Waikiki area, underscored the importance of taking action against perpetrators of violence targeting seniors. Efforts to apprehend the suspect are ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.

The family of the victims expressed gratitude for the support they have received from the community during this challenging time. As investigations continue, they hope for swift justice and a resolution to the traumatic event that befell their loved ones.
