Brothers’ Argument Turns Deadly in New Mexico Gun Violence Tragedy

Chamisal, New Mexico – An altercation between two brothers in Chamisal, New Mexico resulted in a tragic incident of gun violence, leading to the deaths of a man and a teenage girl. Manuel Laurencio Martinez, 76, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder following the incident. According to court documents, he allegedly shot his brother, 69-year-old Ruben Martinez, and the unidentified 14-year-old girl outside his residence.

Martinez, who had no prior criminal record in New Mexico, was arrested and booked into Taos County jail on Thursday night. State police officers responded to the shooting after receiving a call around 8:40 p.m. The suspect claimed that an argument with his brother and the girl had escalated to a physical altercation, prompting him to retrieve a handgun and fire six shots.

Prosecutors from the 8th Judicial District filed a motion seeking to detain Martinez until his trial, despite his lack of criminal history. Allegations include Martinez admitting to police that neither victim was touching him when he discharged the firearm. A nephew of the brothers revealed that the girl and her father had been at Ruben Martinez’s residence, located next door to Manuel’s, in the days leading up to the incident.

Manuel Martinez confessed to observing the girl entering his brother’s home on the day of the shooting. He confronted her about the alleged break-in, leading to a confrontation with his brother who defended the girl’s actions. Martinez claimed self-defense, stating that he feared his brother would return to harm him. Following the shooting, he drove to a gas station and later returned home to find the girl’s body missing.

The situation unfolded further when the girl’s father sought help at a nearby shop with his daughter’s body. Martinez’s nephew recalled his uncle confessing to the killings, expressing frustration with the alleged mistreatment he had endured. When questioned by investigators, Martinez admitted to regretting his actions. The tragic incident in Chamisal has left the community in shock and mourning the loss of two lives.
