Clash Between Security Forces and Shi’ite Protesters in Abuja Leads to Arrest of 295 People

Abuja, Nigeria – In a disturbing turn of events, a violent clash erupted between security forces and members of the banned Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, at Banex Junction, Wuse 2 in Abuja. This confrontation led to the arrest of 295 individuals, highlighting the escalating tensions in the region.

Tragically, the clash resulted in the deaths of 11 people, with 32 others sustaining severe injuries during the chaotic incident. The clash reportedly began at around 2:20 p.m. when IMN members, allegedly armed with various weapons including firearms, cutlasses, and homemade petrol bombs, initiated an attack on military personnel stationed at the Banex area along Aminu Kano Crescent, as stated by a report by counterterrorism analyst Zagazola Makama.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of mayhem as the protesters clashed violently with the security forces, escalating the situation further when they reportedly opened fire and hurled projectiles at the operatives. Three military personnel were gravely injured and swiftly transported to the National Hospital for urgent medical care.

A senior security official revealed that the security forces were compelled to use “minimal force” to disperse the protesters, leading to the arrest of 19 suspects at the scene, while others managed to evade capture. Subsequently, a coordinated joint security operation was initiated across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), leading to the apprehension of 295 individuals connected to the incident.

As authorities moved swiftly to address public concerns and restore calm in the affected area, heightened security measures were implemented around key locations and detention facilities to prevent any potential resurgence of violence.
