Explosive Attack on Anti-Racist NGO Raises Concerns Over Safety of Human Rights Defenders in Cyprus

Nicosia, Cyprus – Following a disturbing attack on the premises of the well-known anti-racist organization KISA, Amnesty International’s Cyprus Researcher Kondylia Gogou expressed grave concerns over the safety of human rights defenders in the country. The organization was targeted in an act of violence, damaging its property. This incident sheds light on the escalating racist violence in Cyprus, with KISA and its volunteers facing threats, verbal assaults, and smear campaigns due to their advocacy for refugees, migrants, and condemnation of hate crimes.

Gogou emphasized the need for authorities in Cyprus to take immediate action against such attacks on human rights defenders and NGOs, stressing the importance of a thorough investigation into the recent violent incident related to KISA’s anti-racist work. There is a call for enhanced measures to ensure the safety of KISA staff and activists in light of these hostile actions.

In the early hours of January 5th, KISA’s offices were targeted by an improvised explosive device, causing significant damage to the property. Reports indicate that KISA and its volunteers have been subjected to various threats and harassment from anti-migrant and nationalist groups in recent years. Despite complaints to the authorities, investigations into these threats have not yielded results.

Furthermore, incidents of racialized attacks on refugees and migrants in Chloraka and Limassol have raised concerns about the rising xenophobia in Cyprus. The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) highlighted the growing xenophobic public discourse in the country, emphasizing the need for urgent action to address such sentiments.

In December 2020, changes to the law on associations led to KISA’s removal from the Registry of Associations, sparking proceedings for its dissolution. Despite ongoing challenges, including pending appeals, KISA continues its operations as a non-profit company. The organization’s resilience in the face of adversity underscores the importance of support for human rights defenders dedicated to combating racism and promoting equality in Cyprus.
