Inmate Hospitalizes Officer with Metal Rod Attack: Denied Bond by Magistrate

DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. – An officer at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center detailed the events surrounding an inmate’s attack during a bond hearing on Friday. The inmate, identified as 30-year-old Sadarius Douglas, faced charges of assaulting the officer, who was left hospitalized as a result.

During the incident, which occurred on Thursday, Douglas allegedly brandished a metal rod and threatened the officer. The officer recounted the altercation, explaining how he ended up getting injured while trying to restrain Douglas. Despite the officer’s efforts to control the situation, Douglas managed to overpower him, causing him to sustain injuries that required hospitalization.

In a bid to prevent further incidents, the officer argued against Douglas being granted bond, emphasizing the violence and threat he poses to both staff and the community. Fourth Circuit Assistant Solicitor Adam Foard supported this stance by highlighting Douglas’s extensive criminal history, pointing to his inclination for committing crimes across various jurisdictions in North Carolina.

Calling Douglas a danger to the community and a flight risk, Foard advocated against granting him any form of bond. Following the arguments presented during the hearing, Darlington County Magistrate Deatrice B. Curtis ultimately denied bond for Douglas, ensuring that he remains in custody at the detention center.

In addition to the current charges related to the assault on the officer, Douglas also faces an armed robbery charge stemming from an incident in the City of Darlington. Despite the possibility of being transferred to another facility, Douglas will remain detained at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center until further legal proceedings unfold. The nature of the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers in correctional facilities and the ongoing efforts to maintain safety and security within such environments.
