Minnesota City Mourns Tragic Loss of Three First Responders in Domestic Incident

Burnsville, Minnesota – A tragic incident in Burnsville, Minnesota, has left the community in mourning after two police officers and a firefighter lost their lives while responding to a domestic disturbance. The fallen heroes were identified as officers Paul Elmstrand, aged 27, and Matthew Ruge, also 27, along with 40-year-old firefighter-paramedic Adam Finseth.

During a news conference, Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz expressed the community’s grief, acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice made by the three individuals. The responding officers had arrived at a home in Burnsville, responding to reports of a man armed and barricaded inside with family members.

The situation soon turned deadly when the individual inside the residence opened fire, leading to the tragic loss of Elmstrand, Ruge, and Finseth. The suspect, identified as Shannon Gooden, 38, was also killed in the exchange. Fortunately, seven children inside the home, ranging from ages 2 to 15, were unharmed and able to leave the scene safely.

Medical examiner reports later confirmed that the deaths of Elmstrand, Ruge, and Finseth were ruled as homicides. Elmstrand suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Ruge was hit in the chest, and Finseth sustained injuries to his right arm and torso. Another officer, Sgt. Adam Medlicott, was injured during the incident but was expected to recover from his non-life-threatening injuries.

The tragic loss of Elmstrand and Ruge adds to the growing number of law enforcement officers lost in the line of duty this year. Governor Tim Walz expressed his condolences, highlighting the bravery and sacrifices made by first responders daily. The families of the fallen heroes were praised for their resilience, with the state offering support during this difficult time.

As details emerged about the lives of the fallen first responders, it was revealed that Elmstrand had been a dedicated member of the Burnsville Police Department since 2017. Ruge joined the force in April 2020 and was known for his kindness and compassion towards others. Finseth, a firefighter-paramedic since 2019, had previously served in neighboring cities, showcasing his commitment to public service.
