TAURANGA, New Zealand – The Ministry for Primary Industries is launching an investigation following the surfacing of a disturbing video depicting a teenager physically assaulting a live octopus on a beach in Bay of Plenty. The video, reportedly shared on the boy’s Instagram story, has sparked outrage and condemnation from various animal welfare organizations and authorities.
Reports indicate that both the Ministry for Primary Industries and the police have received complaints regarding the violent behavior captured in the video. The Ministry has expressed strong disapproval of the actions shown and has assured the public that they will be looking into the matter further.
Debra Ashton, the chief executive of SAFE, labeled the attack on the innocent sea creature as “senseless, disturbing, and violent.” SAFE has taken formal steps by filing a complaint with the Ministry for Primary Industries, urging members of the public to assist in identifying the individuals responsible for the cruel act.
In response to the incident, the Department of Conservation refrained from commenting on the matter, highlighting that it falls within the jurisdiction of the Ministry for Primary Industries.
The Tauranga Sport Fishing Club disassociated itself from the individuals involved in the video, indicating that they were not affiliated with the club and redirecting inquiries to the club’s committee for further clarification.
The SPCA has also been approached for comment, further indicating the widespread concern and condemnation surrounding the distressing video. The public outcry and calls for accountability emphasize the importance of respecting and protecting marine life in New Zealand’s coastal areas.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities working to ensure that those responsible for the inhumane treatment of the octopus are held accountable for their actions.
