NEW YORK – A man from Jamaica is facing up to fifteen years in prison after pleading guilty to raping a woman and attempting to kill her in a brutal rooftop attack that took place in August 2023, according to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.
Jerson Vasquez, 25, admitted to charges of rape, attempted murder, and other offenses in Queens Supreme Court. The incident occurred after Vasquez responded to an advertisement for prostitution-related services on Facebook Marketplace. He lured the woman to a rooftop in Jamaica, where he assaulted her, stole money, and fled the scene.
The victim, who suffered extensive injuries including a laceration to the back of her head that required staples, was left traumatized by the attack. Vasquez was captured on video surveillance leaving the location with blood on his neck and hand, linking him to the crime.
District Attorney Katz emphasized the severity of the crime, describing it as a brazen and brutal daytime attack. She commended the survivor for her bravery in coming forward, allowing for charges of rape and attempted murder to be filed against Vasquez.
As part of his guilty plea, Vasquez will face a 15-year prison sentence with an additional 10 years of post-release supervision. The sentencing is scheduled for February 25th, providing some closure for the survivor as she begins the healing process from the traumatic event.
