Liverpool, New York – Tragedy struck as two law enforcement officers lost their lives while in pursuit of a driver who had fled a traffic stop in upstate New York. The incident, which resulted in the deaths of Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Michael Hoosock and Syracuse police officer Michael Jensen, also claimed the life of the shooter, identified as Christopher Murphy, 33.
According to authorities, the shootout occurred outside a residence in Liverpool, a residential neighborhood about 6 miles north of Syracuse, late Sunday evening. Jensen had initially attempted to pull over a car, but the driver refused to stop, leading to a high-speed chase. Upon tracking the license plate to an address in Liverpool, the officers requested backup from the sheriff’s office.
During a news conference, Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile revealed that officers heard suspicious noises coming from the house while inspecting the vehicle. This prompted them to take cover, unaware that they were about to face a deadly ambush by Murphy, who was inside the residence.
Hoosock, a respected 17-year veteran of the force and a family man, tragically lost his life while seeking cover behind a maple tree in an adjacent yard. Sheriff Toby Shelley described how the suspect, armed with a firearm, fired upon the officers without warning, resulting in the loss of both Hoosock and Jensen.
The fallen officers, along with the shooter, were rushed to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where they were pronounced dead. Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her shock and sadness over the senseless killings, emphasizing that New York will always remember their bravery and sacrifices.
