SAN JOSE, Calif. — A police officer in San Jose was critically injured in a shooting while responding to an armed carjacking on Wednesday. Authorities reported that the officer has been hospitalized but is expected to survive.
Law enforcement officials identified the suspect, who is believed to have initiated the violent series of events, as a resident of Davis. The spree commenced around 2 p.m. when the suspect stole a vehicle from a dealership, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
Using aerial surveillance, a helicopter managed to track the suspect’s movements as he fled into San Benito County. By 3 p.m., police in Hollister, located more than 40 miles from San Jose, engaged in a pursuit that involved gunfire. The suspect, reportedly in a stolen green Corvette, abandoned the vehicle in the city and fired at officers before escaping on foot. Thankfully, no Hollister officers were harmed during this initial confrontation.
Moments later, sheriff’s deputies from San Benito located the suspect, leading to another exchange of gunfire. Although the deputies were unharmed, the suspect stole another vehicle at gunpoint, continuing his flight into Santa Clara County while discharging his weapon from the moving car.
The pursuit came to a halt on Julian Street, close to the Terraine Street intersection in San Jose, just off Highway 87. The suspect exited the stolen vehicle and engaged in a gunfight with law enforcement before attempting to carjack another vehicle. During these chaotic moments, he was struck by an officer’s vehicle.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, although the specific cause of death remains under investigation. It is not yet known whether he succumbed to gunfire or injuries from the vehicle collision. The medical examiner is tasked with determining the circumstances surrounding his death.
As a result of the police activity, the California Highway Patrol temporarily closed Highway 87 in both directions near the incident site, causing significant disruptions in the area.
This situation continues to evolve, with local law enforcement promising to release more information as it becomes available.
