Officer Jonah Hernandez Funeral Surveillance Footage Revealed in Shocking Video Release

Las Cruces, New Mexico – The Las Cruces Police Department recently released surveillance footage and body camera video capturing the tragic incident that led to the death of Officer Jonah Hernandez on Feb. 11. Hernandez was responding to a trespassing call when he was fatally stabbed by 29-year-old Armando Silva at 355 South Valley Drive.

Police Chief Jeremy Story shared the video during a press conference, highlighting the need for increased safety measures in Las Cruces and New Mexico. Story emphasized the importance of honoring Hernandez’s memory by advocating for positive change in the community.

One key issue raised by Story is the understaffing of the LCPD, with only 195 officers currently employed out of the approved 220. He mentioned the challenges of patrolling a large area with limited resources, especially when officers are inundated with a high volume of daily calls.

In addition to addressing staffing shortages, Story also highlighted the pressing need to tackle mental health and substance abuse issues in the community. He emphasized the importance of investing in community violence prevention programs and real-time crime centers to enhance overall safety and support for law enforcement officers.

Moreover, Story called for a comprehensive approach to addressing repeat offenders and competency issues within the legal system. He stressed the importance of implementing effective strategies to reduce crime rates and improve outcomes for individuals with mental health challenges.

The tragic incident involving Officer Hernandez shed light on the dangers faced by law enforcement officers on a daily basis. As the community mourns his loss, the city and state officials are working together to implement meaningful changes to support the safety and well-being of both residents and law enforcement personnel.
