Ohio man thinks his teen girlfriend cheated while he was in jail so he shoots her days after his release

OREGON, OH – For Haiden Babiuch, 18, an ordinary December evening turned tragic in a neighborhood just outside Toledo. Authorities accuse her boyfriend, 20-year-old Ezekiel James, of fatally shooting her only four days after he was released from jail on parole violations.

Prosecutors allege that the young couple’s relationship had fractured in the weeks leading up to the shooting, tension mounting after James learned Babiuch had contemplated leaving. Court records indicate that James, recently out of jail after serving time for weapons charges and tampering with evidence, was upset over suspicions of infidelity during his incarceration.

According to law enforcement, on December 6, Babiuch was found dead inside the Crestway Drive residence that she shared with James’s family. Investigators said James initially told officers she had died by suicide. However, police noted his story included few details. When pressed, James cited only relationship troubles as a possible reason for her death.

Family members reportedly pointed to an argument over infidelity and suggested Babiuch wanted to move out of the family home. However, they said she ultimately remained after being coaxed to stay.

The events leading up to Babiuch’s death were set in motion days earlier when James allegedly confessed to his parole officer that he possessed a firearm, a violation of his parole. He was briefly returned to jail, only for authorities to grant his release on December 2. Within days, tragedy struck.

Police initially released James while awaiting further investigation. The subsequent autopsy, however, ruled Babiuch’s death a homicide, prompting authorities to take James back into custody. On Tuesday, a grand jury indicted him on charges of murder and felonious assault.

Babiuch, who worked for Amazon, is remembered by loved ones as outgoing and adventurous, with a quick smile and a fondness for scary movies and fishing trips with her family. Friends described her as a vibrant presence whose absence would be deeply felt.

James is currently being held at the Wood County Jail without bond. Prosecutors say he is awaiting arraignment on murder charges and remains a suspect as the investigation continues.

The community, meanwhile, mourns the loss of a young life and grapples with the swift turn of events that led to a family in mourning just weeks before the end of the year.
