Pleads Guilty: Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Murder and Inmate Stabbing Spree

Jackson, Mississippi – In a tragic turn of events, a man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, and aggravated assault in connection to a violent incident that occurred in July 2020.

According to reports, 29-year-old Jabari Peterson was found dead inside a home on Rosslyn Avenue, following a call to Jackson Police officers. The perpetrator, Shaquille Thompson, allegedly shot Peterson in the back and chest after a verbal altercation, before fleeing the scene. Witnesses later identified Thompson as the shooter.

Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, stated that Thompson received a sentence of 40 years, with 10 years suspended, and 30 years to be served in the Mississippi Department of Corrections, along with five years of post-release supervision. Additionally, he was sentenced to 10 years, with five years post-release supervision for a separate count.

In a disturbing development, Thompson and another inmate were involved in the physical assault of inmate Rekedrick Adams, resulting in multiple stab wounds. Adams was even stabbed in the head with a piece of broken glass during the altercation. Fortunately, Adams was able to identify both assailants.

As a consequence of his actions, Thompson was handed a 20-year sentence, with 10 years suspended, and 10 years to be served in the Mississippi Department of Corrections, coupled with five years of post-release supervision. District Attorney Owens clarified that all these sentences would run concurrently, totaling 30 years of incarceration with five years of post-release supervision.
