Arlington, Texas, was rocked by tragedy as an 18-year-old high school student was fatally shot on Wednesday afternoon by one of his peers, prompting a lockdown and investigation by the local police department.
The victim, identified as Etavion Barnes, was a student at James Bowie High School. He was discovered by school resource officers in an unresponsive state on the ground, leading to an immediate response from emergency services at the scene.
According to a news release, the incident unfolded when police received reports of shots being fired around 2:50 p.m. School resource officers quickly located Barnes outside near a portable building, where he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite efforts to save him, Barnes was pronounced dead at 3:27 p.m. after being rushed to Medical City Arlington. Following the shooting, the high school was placed on lockdown as law enforcement officials began their search for the suspected shooter.
The suspected shooter, identified as 17-year-old Julian Howard, was apprehended without incident by officers. Howard was subsequently booked into Arlington City Jail on a charge of murder. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, with authorities describing it as a targeted attack.
While the murder weapon has yet to be recovered, police are actively investigating how the suspect may have obtained the firearm.
