Phoenix, Arizona — A confrontation over a bathroom line escalated tragically into violence, leaving a 52-year-old man dead and a 25-year-old suspect in custody. The incident occurred Monday morning at a QuikTrip gas station, where Danny Kaster was shot multiple times during a dispute with Deondre Franklin.
Authorities reported that the altercation unfolded shortly before 8 a.m. as Kaster attempted to address Franklin’s decision to cut in line. Upon arrival, police found Kaster on the floor outside the men’s restroom. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to a hospital.
Witnesses recounted the moments leading to the shooting. As Kaster informed Franklin of the line, tensions grew. A witness who was inside the restroom recalled Kaster’s verbal confrontation with Franklin, who allegedly taunted him before suggesting they “take it outside.” The situation quickly intensified when gunfire erupted just after the pair exited the bathroom.
Reports describe several bystanders observing the chaotic aftermath. One witness noted seeing Franklin brandishing a firearm while Kaster struggled to disarm him. The witness heard multiple shots fired before rushing to assist Kaster, who was bleeding from the gunshots.
Surveillance footage seems to corroborate witness accounts, showing Franklin aiming his weapon at Kaster before firing. After the violent encounter, Franklin allegedly fled the scene in a gray sedan with an unidentified woman.
Later that day, Franklin contacted his family, admitting to the shooting incident. His stepfather urged him to surrender, leading to Franklin’s arrest the following day. He faces a second-degree murder charge.
During police interviews, Franklin claimed he had not realized there was a queue for the restroom and insisted he acted out of fear after Kaster allegedly followed him out. He described feeling threatened by Kaster’s presence but expressed remorse over the tragic outcome.
In response to Kaster’s untimely death, family members established a memorial at the site of the shooting, honoring his memory as a family-oriented individual, known for his love of dogs and his devotion to those close to him. Kaster’s sister expressed devastation over the loss, reflecting on the abrupt end to his life.
As friends and family mourn, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover funeral expenses, highlighting the community’s effort to support Kaster’s loved ones in this difficult time.
