Suspect Fatally Shot by Albemarle Deputies After Pursuit: Virginia State Police Investigating

Albemarle County, Virginia – Virginia State Police are currently investigating an incident that resulted in the death of a suspect following an officer-involved shooting with Albemarle County Sheriff’s deputies during a pursuit on Wednesday afternoon.

The situation began when officers from the Waynesboro Police Department responded to a shooting report on Hopeman Parkway in Waynesboro just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10. Upon arrival, they observed the suspect fleeing the scene in a vehicle. Additional officers attempted to halt the suspect’s vehicle, but the suspect refused to stop, leading to a pursuit.

The pursuit extended over Afton Mountain into Albemarle County, culminating at 5:38 p.m. when the suspect veered off the side of Interstate 64 East and collided with a guardrail. Subsequently, shots were fired during an encounter with the suspect, resulting in their injury. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Kevin Taylor of Charlottesville, was transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where they later succumbed to their injuries. Authorities confirmed that Taylor was shot during the incident and a firearm was found at the crash site.

Given the circumstances, the Waynesboro Police Chief requested the Virginia State Police to lead the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Once the investigation is concluded, the findings will be forwarded to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for review and potential adjudication.
