Tragic Death of Veteran Sheriff’s Deputy Following Mobile Shooting Range Fire

Los Angeles, California – A veteran Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy tragically passed away after battling severe burns sustained in a fire at one of the department’s mobile shooting ranges. Alfredo “Freddy” Flores, aged 51, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday evening at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Sylmar. The incident occurred last October in Castaic when the tractor-trailer range he was in caught fire unexpectedly.

Flores, a dedicated officer with 22 years of service, worked at various locations within the department, including the North County Correctional Facility and Altadena Station. At the time of the accident, he was part of the Court Services West Bureau. Described as well-respected both within the department and the community, Flores leaves behind a lasting impact on those who knew him, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Department.

The cause of the fire, which began at the trailer parked next to the men’s jail at Pitchess Detention Center, is still under investigation. Following the incident, the department took immediate action by shutting down all mobile firing ranges, initiating an internal inquiry, and seeking assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

This unfortunate event marks at least the fourth occurrence in less than a decade where a mobile range operated by the Sheriff’s Department was engulfed in flames. In instances dating back to 2016, fires have been sparked by various causes, highlighting the potential risks associated with such training facilities. Experts have noted the importance of proper maintenance and ventilation to mitigate fire hazards.

Expressing deep sorrow over the loss, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn emphasized the tragic nature of Flores’ passing during what should have been a routine training exercise. The family spokesperson, Joe A. Nunez, acknowledged the inherent risks involved in Flores’ position but maintained they were unprepared for the equipment malfunction that led to his untimely departure.

As the community mourns the loss of Deputy Flores, funeral arrangements are pending completion, with his legacy of service and dedication remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. The lasting impact of this incident serves as a reminder of the sacrifices law enforcement officers make every day in the line of duty, resonating deeply within the department and beyond.
