University A mob attacks foreign students for offering namaz at Gujarat University: Investigation continues after five arrests

Ahmedabad, India – Two weeks after a mob attacked and injured foreign students for offering namaz during Ramzan at Gujarat University, questions remain unanswered regarding the police response and the motives behind the assault. The incident, which took place on March 16 at the university’s hostel where foreign students reside, left many in fear and confusion as the attackers vandalized belongings and injured several students.

The mob of 20 to 25 people targeted Muslim students who were praying at their usual spot during the holy month of Ramzan. The attack resulted in five students being injured, with two requiring hospitalization. Despite the presence of police at the scene, witnesses noted a delayed response and a lack of immediate action by the authorities, allowing some assailants to escape.

Following the incident, videos of the attack circulated on social media, highlighting the religious nature of the assault as members of the mob were seen wearing saffron scarves and chanting religious slogans. In response, the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner and the Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor visited the hostel and promised strict action in the investigation.

The police have since made five arrests, all of whom are outsiders, and have launched a probe into the possible triggers of the violence. Frictions between local and foreign students, particularly regarding the offering of namaz and the consumption of non-vegetarian food, have been cited as potential factors leading to the attack.

In the aftermath of the violence, university authorities took measures to ensure the safety of foreign students, including shifting them to a new hostel block with increased security. The incident has drawn international attention, prompting discussions with officials from the Union Ministry of External Affairs and Afghanistan’s Consul-General to India.

While the police continue their investigation into the assault, university officials and students express shock over the unprecedented attack, emphasizing the need to prevent such incidents in the future. Despite ongoing tensions and unanswered questions, efforts are being made to provide a secure environment for all students at Gujarat University.
