Woman taken hostage by Michigan bank robber during police standoff

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI – A tense bank standoff in Saginaw Township came to a dramatic end Friday when police used an unusual tactic involving a drone and a bottle of soda to safely resolve a hostage situation.

The incident began late in the afternoon when Quinton Marquese Allen, 31, allegedly entered Mercantile Bank after closing time and confronted a lone employee. Authorities said Allen tried to cash what was believed to be a fraudulent check and became violent after the employee refused. Police reported that Allen assaulted the worker and held her inside, threatening her with a weapon described as non-firearm.

Police quickly arrived on the scene, securing the area and calling in specialized units. Streets around the bank were blocked off as officers and tactical vehicles positioned themselves while residents looked on.

As negotiations continued, Allen reportedly requested a bottle of red Faygo soda from investigators communicating with him inside the bank. Law enforcement officials decided to fulfill the request using a drone, carefully lowering the drink inside a bag near the window where Allen was holed up.

The ruse worked as Allen moved toward the window to retrieve the soda, exposing himself to police outside. At that moment, a Michigan State Police trooper fired and fatally shot Allen, bringing the four-hour ordeal to an end.

The bank employee, whose name has not been made public, managed to walk out of the building to safety and was immediately hospitalized for evaluation. She was treated and released later that evening.

Investigators said Allen did not possess a firearm during the incident, though authorities have not disclosed the exact nature of the weapon he threatened the employee with. Officials confirmed no other employees or customers were present in the building at the time.

Mercantile Bank released a statement later that night, expressing gratitude to law enforcement and confirming that all employees were safe. The bank said its Saginaw location will remain closed until further notice as the investigation continues.

Authorities have not released additional details about Allen’s motivations or history, and the Michigan State Police are expected to review the incident as standard procedure when officers use deadly force.
