Orangeburg, South Carolina – A man from Orangeburg, Gregory Ellison, 42, has been sentenced to 40 months in federal prison for assaulting a federal employee. The United States Attorney District of South Carolina revealed this information on Wednesday.
Ellison’s sentencing comes after a disturbing incident on March 20, 2023, when he attacked a U.S. Postal Mail Carrier at a daycare facility in Orangeburg. The carrier, who had a previous relationship with Ellison, was assaulted inside the facility in the presence of children and workers. Despite managing to escape to her mail truck, Ellison relentlessly pursued her, causing further harm by physically assaulting her and stealing her belongings.
In the subsequent investigation, it was discovered that Ellison had made repeated visits to the carrier’s workplace in the weeks leading up to the assault. His aggressive behavior extended to threatening messages sent to the victim before and after the attack, including requests for firearms to others. Public officials noted Ellison’s prior convictions for similar offenses, highlighting a pattern of violence and harassment.
Adair F. Boroughs, U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina, emphasized the commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens and federal employees. The severity of Ellison’s actions underscores the need to hold individuals accountable for endangering the well-being of USPS workers, as stated by Tommy D. Coke, inspector-in-charge of the Atlanta Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
United States District Judge Sherri A. Lydon presided over Ellison’s case, ultimately sentencing him to serve 40 months in prison followed by three years of court-ordered supervision. This sentence signifies a firm stance against violence towards federal employees and reinforces the consequences for such egregious behavior within the federal system.
