BEAVERTON, Ore. – In a disturbing case in Beaverton, a man was found guilty of a brutal attack on a wheelchair-bound woman. Timothy Paul Fitzgerald, 54, was convicted on multiple charges, including assault, sodomy, sexual abuse, kidnapping, attempted rape, and unlawful sexual penetration.
The incident took place when Fitzgerald approached a homeless and physically disabled woman who was sleeping on a sidewalk in downtown Beaverton. After offering her money, which she refused, Fitzgerald viciously attacked her, causing severe injuries to her face. He then moved her to a secluded area where he physically and sexually assaulted her for nearly 40 minutes.
Fortunately, the assault was captured on surveillance video from a nearby business and was interrupted by a street sweeper who entered the parking lot where the crime was taking place. The victim, confined to a wheelchair, was unable to escape quickly.
Following the attack, Fitzgerald fled the scene but was eventually apprehended by police at the Beaverton Transit Center. DNA evidence confirmed the presence of the victim’s DNA on Fitzgerald’s body, leading to his conviction on multiple charges.
Although Fitzgerald was initially indicted on a bias crime charge, the judge removed that count from jury consideration. Despite this decision, the Washington County District Attorney’s Office praised the victim for her courage and cooperation throughout the legal process.
A sentencing hearing for Fitzgerald is scheduled for March 17, with the perpetrator remaining in custody until then. The case highlights the importance of swift justice for victims of violent crimes and the tireless work of law enforcement in ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice.
