Brutal Attack on Dalit Student in Tamil Nadu Leads to Arrest of Upper Caste Assailants

Sivagangai, Tamil Nadu – A shocking incident unfolded near Melapidavur in Sivagangai district, Tamil Nadu, where a Dalit student fell victim to a brutal attack by three upper-caste Hindu men, leaving him with severe injuries to his hands. The victim, identified as Ayyasami, a dedicated third-year student at a local government college, was viciously assaulted while riding home on his uncle Bhoominathan’s Royal Enfield motorcycle. Reports indicate that the attackers hurled caste-based insults at Ayyasami before carrying out the vicious assault. Fortunately, witnesses to the incident swiftly intervened and rushed Ayyasami to the Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital for medical treatment, where he remains under care.

The local authorities at SIPCOT police have taken swift action by registering a case against the perpetrators under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, addressing offenses related to grievous harm, criminal intimidation, and discrimination. The three individuals responsible for the attack – Vinoth, Aadhi Eeswaran, and Vallarasu – have been apprehended, with ongoing investigations seeking to bring justice to the situation.

This disturbing incident comes on the heels of a similarly harrowing event in December 2024, where a nine-year-old Dalit boy faced a brutal assault over accusations of drawing on a car’s dirty window. During the altercation, two bystanders attempting to intervene were also subjected to violence, sparking widespread outrage and calls for justice. The perpetrator, identified as 26-year-old Mohan, was later arrested for his role in the vicious attack on the young boy. According to reports, the incident unfolded when Mohan forcibly detained the fourth-grade student and subjected him, along with two other children, to severe physical abuse inside his residence, accusing them of defacing his vehicle.

Such incidents spotlight the ongoing challenges faced by marginalized communities in their daily lives, underscoring the pressing need for increased awareness, education, and enforcement of laws aimed at protecting vulnerable populations from discrimination and violence. Tragically, these episodes serve as stark reminders of the deep-rooted societal issues that continue to plague communities, necessitating concerted efforts to promote inclusivity and equality for all individuals.
