Brooklyn, New York – In a shocking video captured inside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, MS-13 gang members can be seen brutally stabbing a man 44 times. The harrowing attack lasted for 37 seconds before a lone correction officer intervened, highlighting the dire conditions at the troubled federal jail.
The video, obtained by the Daily News, vividly depicts the horrific incident that took place at the Sunset Park jail. Judges, inmates, and defense lawyers have long complained about the appalling conditions at the facility, leading to concerns about safety and security.
Amid a series of violent episodes at the jail, including two stabbing deaths, the video captured the lead suspect in the attack, Luis “Inquieto” Rivas, engaged in the brutal assault. Rivas, with a history of violent crimes, was serving a lengthy prison sentence for previous offenses.
The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, was seated at a table when Rivas and two other MS-13 members launched the vicious attack. The correction officer’s delayed response, along with the lack of immediate medical assistance for the victim, further underscored the challenges faced by inmates at the MDC.
Following the incident, internal prison charges were brought against Rivas, but no additional criminal charges had been filed at that time. The MDC, the city’s sole federal jail, has faced criticism for its inadequate staffing levels and substandard medical care, leading to concerns about inmate safety.
