Providence, Rhode Island — Federal investigators are examining a tragic shooting incident at Brown University that left two students and an MIT professor dead, while nine others were injured. The December 13 attack marked a significant act of violence, prompting a widespread response from law enforcement agencies over several weeks.
On Tuesday, authorities released transcripts of videos made by the alleged shooter, Claudio Manuel Neves Valente. The footage reportedly captured his reflections on the premeditated attack, suggesting he had targeted Brown University deliberately.
Neves Valente is believed to have been responsible not only for the rampage at Brown but also for the subsequent killing of Nuno Loureiro, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, just two days later in Brookline, Massachusetts. Among the injured, eight of the Brown University students have since been discharged from the hospital, while one remains under care.
As the investigation unfolds, details emerge about the shooter’s background. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts announced that a search warrant executed at a storage facility frequented by Neves Valente led to the recovery of videos recorded shortly after the incidents. In these recordings, he expressed no remorse for his actions, stating that he had long planned the attack.
Despite admitting to the premeditation, Neves Valente did not disclose a clear motive for targeting the university students or the professor. Investigators are currently working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to trace the weapon used in the shootings, although specifics about its purchase and origin remain undisclosed.
Josh Schirard, a former tactical emergency response director, commented on the transcripts, emphasizing that they illustrate the shooter’s acknowledgement of his actions without exploring the reasons behind them. He noted that Neves Valente claimed to have a rational mindset, denying any mental health issues, which adds complexity to understanding his motivations.
Neves Valente reportedly voiced his inner conflict over the act of killing, mentioning that he envied those who could do so without hesitation. Investigators describe him as having been resolute in his actions, further complicating the narrative surrounding the tragedy.
Authorities confirmed that Neves Valente died by suicide shortly before his body was discovered in a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire. This revelation adds another layer to an already intricate investigation.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating event, local officials have declared there is no ongoing public safety threat. Updates from law enforcement are expected as they continue to untangle the details surrounding the shootings.
