Sexual Assault Suspect in Venice Canals Faces Multiple Felony Charges

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – A man has been charged with multiple felonies after allegedly attacking and sexually assaulting two women near the Venice Canals, according to prosecutors. Anthony Francisco Jones, 29, faces charges that include forcible rape, mayhem, torture, and attempted murder. If convicted, he could potentially face life in prison. The attacks, described as “brutal” by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, targeted multiple victims and resulted in great bodily injury.

During a news conference, Gascón highlighted the severity of the assaults and the impact they had on the victims. Jones has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and despite his original bail being set at over $3 million, prosecutors successfully argued for him to be held without bail.

The first attack took place on April 6 in the 2700 block of Strongs Drive, where Jones allegedly knocked a woman unconscious and caused severe injuries. The victim, identified as Mary Klein, suffered eight facial fractures and required multiple surgeries. A second assault occurred shortly after the first, leaving another woman hospitalized in a coma.

Jones was apprehended in San Diego following the attacks after reportedly fleeing the scene. LAPD Detective Brent Hopkins praised the Venice community for their assistance in providing crucial surveillance footage that led to the suspect’s identification. Despite having no significant criminal history, LAPD Chief Dominic Choi stated that there were no prior indicators to suggest Jones would commit such heinous crimes.

The community’s quick action and collaboration with law enforcement were instrumental in the arrest of the suspect and ensuring justice for the victims. The authorities continue to investigate the case and provide support to those affected by the traumatic events.
