Whitestown, Indiana — An investigation is ongoing to determine whether charges will be filed against a homeowner who fatally shot a woman mistakenly identified as a threat after she arrived at the wrong residence while working as a house cleaner.
Maria Florinda Rios Perez De Velasquez, 32, was discovered dead on the front porch of the home shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday. According to police reports, Rios Perez was part of a cleaning crew that inadvertently went to the wrong address in this small suburb near Indianapolis.
Her husband, Mauricio Velazquez, recounted the tragic event, stating that he was with his wife at the door when she was shot and fell into his arms. He described the moment as surreal, noting he was unaware of the situation turning deadly until it was too late.
Family members are mourning the loss of Rios Perez, who was also a mother of four. Although originally from Indianapolis, her family plans to lay her to rest in Guatemala, honoring their heritage. The family set up a fundraising page to assist with funeral expenses, emphasizing the impact of her loss on their lives.
Authorities have yet to disclose the identity of the shooter, but the case has been submitted to Boone County Prosecutor Kent Eastwood, who has indicated that the decision on potential charges will not be straightforward. He acknowledged the complexities introduced by Indiana’s “castle doctrine,” which allows homeowners to use reasonable force, including lethal force, in response to perceived threats.
Prosecutors in other states have previously secured convictions in similar circumstances, signaling that legal repercussions could potentially follow if the shooter is deemed to have acted outside of the law. Eastwood mentioned that he’ll meticulously review all evidence, including witness testimony and any available video footage, to better understand the sequence of events.
“The challenge we face is determining what is considered reasonable in a highly charged moment like this,” Eastwood said. He emphasized the importance of taking a detailed approach to the facts before reaching any conclusions.
The incident has sparked conversations about homeowner rights and self-defense laws, prompting community members to reflect on safety, accountability, and the tragic outcomes of misunderstandings.
