Teenagers Charged in Deadly Shooting Near Chicago High School Trigger Increased Police Presence

Chicago, Illinois – Two teenage boys are facing charges in connection to a deadly shooting near Senn High School in Edgewater. The incident, which took place last month, resulted in the tragic death of 16-year-old Daveon Gibson and left two other Senn students injured – boys ages 15 and 16.

Kashawn Prude, 17, and a 14-year-old boy have been charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Prude, charged as an adult, also faces an additional charge of aggravated battery with discharge of a firearm. Both boys are said to be students from Uplift Community High School located in Uptown.

Prosecutors revealed that there was a confrontation between the defendants and the victims before the shooting occurred. Daveon’s grandmother, Sherry Wesley, expressed forgiveness towards the perpetrator during a recent vigil, stating, “I’m broken. My family is broken. All I want is justice.”

Chicago police were able to identify the vehicle used in the shooting, a stolen gray Honda with Florida registration. Prosecutors believe that Prude drove the stolen Honda, while the 14-year-old suspect sat in the back. The shooting took place on Thorndale Avenue, where prosecutors allege that Prude used the car to cut off the three students and the 14-year-old suspect fired into the crowd.

Witnesses observed the events unfold, with an Amazon driver in the area providing key details to law enforcement. Prosecutors stated that the defendants later returned to the car, changed clothes, and went back to school. With the help of community tips and video footage, both suspects were identified and taken into custody.

During a detention hearing, it was revealed that Prude had been arrested eight times since 2021 for offenses ranging from battery to theft. Based on his criminal background, the judge deemed Prude a threat to the community and rejected electronic monitoring as sufficient. The increase in shootings near high schools has led to heightened police presence during school dismissal and arrival times to ensure student safety.

The incident highlights the tragic consequences of gun violence and the need for community support to prevent such senseless acts in the future.
