SAN ANTONIO, TX – The life of 37-year-old Michael Obryan Martin was abruptly cut short in December 2022, leaving loved ones reeling in the aftermath of a deadly confrontation with his former landlord. Authorities say Martin was shot and killed during what was supposed to be a routine key return, following an eviction from the San Antonio property where he once resided.
Martin, remembered by those who knew him as a hardworking individual trying to regain his footing after recent housing instability, died from a gunshot wound inside the residence. His body was discovered after police responded to a call reporting the shooting.
According to investigators, Joshua A. Ford, 37, who owned the home Martin had recently vacated, was present at the scene when officers arrived. Detectives said Ford had come to conduct a final walk-through inspection of the property on December 7, 2022, accompanied by another individual. During the inspection, Martin arrived unexpectedly, apparently responding to Ford’s request to return the house key.
A discussion about past-due rent reportedly escalated into a heated dispute, with the two men moving from room to room. The verbal exchange culminated in the utility room, where, according to Ford, Martin appeared to make a threatening gesture. Ford told officers he believed Martin was reaching for a weapon, prompting him to fire his own gun. Police reported that Martin was shot twice, with one bullet striking him in the face.
After the gunfire, Ford told authorities he unloaded his firearm, left it on a kitchen counter, and called 911 for assistance. Emergency responders pronounced Martin dead at the scene.
Authorities said Ford remained cooperative during the initial investigation and told officers he had acted in self-defense. However, months of reviewing evidence and statements ultimately led to Ford’s arrest this week. Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies took Ford into custody on Wednesday, charging him with murder in connection with Martin’s death.
