Tragedy Strikes: 16-Year-Old Rasheed Mills Killed in Over-The-Rhine Shooting

CINCINNATI — A tragic incident in Over-The-Rhine claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy on Thursday night. Emergency services responded to reports of a shooting in an apartment located in the 1300 block of Vine Street, where they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Authorities later identified the victim as Rasheed Mills. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and police have stated that the suspect fled the scene. So far, no description of the suspect has been released, and law enforcement continues to investigate the matter.

Rasheed, who recently celebrated his 16th birthday, was a sophomore at Taft High School. His father described him as a hardworking young man, balancing two jobs—one of which involved working as a camp counselor at a camp focused on youth with diabetes. Those who knew Rasheed spoke highly of him, describing him as a well-liked and respectful individual.

“I gave him a hug just a few days ago,” said a neighbor who knew him well. “I can’t speak to the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, but I can say he was a very nice young man.”

Rasheed had connections with Camp Korelitz, where he had participated and was set to become a counselor in training this summer. The camp’s director, Joe Esten, expressed profound sadness over Rasheed’s passing, stating, “He was a valued member of our Camp family and will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time.”

As the investigation progresses, authorities have yet to determine a motive for the shooting. Community members are coming together to mourn the loss of a promising young individual whose life was cut short far too soon.
