Gandatwisa, Tripura – In the wake of violent clashes that tore through Gandatwisa, Tripura, Minister Tinku Roy led a four-member team to visit the affected area. The villagers, still reeling from their homes being set ablaze, greeted the officials with strong resentment following the recent turmoil that erupted after the tragic death of a 19-year-old man in a clash between two groups.
During the visit, aggrieved villagers took their frustrations out on the office of the Gandatwisa Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), expressing their anger over what they perceived as inaction by the police and local administration during the mob attack on July 12. A video that circulated on social media captured a youth confronting the minister, emphasizing that 11 scheduled wedding ceremonies in the area had to be canceled due to the arson.
Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy reassured the distraught villagers of government support, promising compensation and heightened security measures to prevent such incidents from happening again. Despite his promises, villagers continued to voice their anger, alleging that authorities were ineffective during the arson. Around 300 villagers who lost their homes in the violence have been sheltering since the incident, with at least 40 houses severely damaged and 30 shops looted during the chaos. Additionally, four motorcycles were burnt on the night of July 12.
Dhalai District Magistrate Saju Vaheed, along with a team, met with affected families to assure them of necessary security measures and compensation. In the aftermath, efforts have been made to deploy additional security personnel in the area to restore order. The violence that erupted started from a clash between two groups in the local market, eventually leading to the tragic death of a college student who succumbed to his injuries on July 12.
