Violence Erupts at Pro-Palestinian UCLA Encampment in Campus Clash

Los Angeles, California – Violence erupted at a pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA in the early hours of Wednesday following a university declaration that the camp violated university policy. Counterdemonstrators, clad in black outfits and white masks, attempted to dismantle the barricades surrounding the encampment late at night. Campers, equipped with lumber, goggles, and helmets, stood their ground to protect the encampment’s perimeter.

Videos captured the chaos, with fireworks ignited and objects hurled at the camp. Fights broke out as counterdemonstrators continuously attacked the camp and its occupants. This marked the most severe violence on campus since pro-Israel counterprotesters established a dueling area near the war protesters’ camp.

In response to attempts to breach the camp, pro-Palestinian members resorted to using pepper spray for self-defense. Security guards on the scene observed the clashes but refrained from intervening. Some campers reported being hit by what they believed to be pepper spray, resulting in eye irritation and other injuries.

UCLA officials, condemning the violence, called for assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department. Vice Chancellor Mary Osako expressed disgust over the senseless violence, emphasizing the urgent need for it to cease. Riot police arrived around 1:40 a.m. to disperse the crowds, although clashes persisted despite law enforcement presence.

By 3 a.m., officers in riot gear managed to clear remaining counter-protesters from the quad area. UCLA faced criticism for its delayed response to stop the clashes, with Professor Ananya Roy decrying the lack of action against the counterprotesters. Mayor Karen Bass denounced the violence as unacceptable and reprehensible.

The incident at UCLA is part of a wave of protests across various universities demanding an end to Israel’s actions in Gaza and divestment from companies supplying weapons or services to the country. As tensions escalate, UCLA Chancellor Gene Block is scheduled to testify before the U.S. House committee on antisemitism, further complicating the situation on campus.

The clashes highlighted the ongoing feud between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups, with both sides accusing the other of violence and intimidation. The encampment represented a battleground of opposing ideologies, creating an atmosphere of fear and hostility on campus. Amidst the chaos, UCLA remains committed to protecting freedom of speech while maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all members of the university community.
