Manteca, California – The body of 38-year-old Indian-origin Manjeet Kaur, who was allegedly murdered by her husband Surinder Singh on New Year’s Eve, has been sent to India after an intervention by the Indian consulate in San Francisco. Consul General Dr. K. Srikar Reddy stated that they are arranging for the transportation of Kaur’s remains and working with the Team Aid organization to facilitate the process.
Team Aid founder Mohan Nannapaneni expressed deep sadness at the tragic murder of Manjeet Kaur and confirmed that they are collaborating with the Indian diplomatic mission to repatriate her body. Kaur’s remains will be received by her parents and siblings in Ludhiana, Punjab, along with her 18-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.
According to Kaur’s family, she had been a victim of domestic violence and had been living in the US with her husband for only six months before her murder. She was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband on December 31, 2023. Singh, 62, was arrested the same night and has been charged with murder and criminal domestic violence.
Kaur’s elder brother shared that Singh had been well-behaved and polite when they were in India, but his behavior drastically changed after they migrated to the US. Despite previous incidents of domestic violence, Kaur had chosen to stay in the US in the hope of creating a better future for herself and her daughter.
The family members in Punjab expressed shock and heartbreak at the murder, and are seeking answers from the authorities in Manteca about the events leading up to Kaur’s death. The case has garnered attention for highlighting the issue of domestic violence and the challenges faced by immigrant women living abroad.
