Plymouth, England – Two men have been convicted for their roles in a violent assault that led to the death of 50-year-old father Stefan Shotton. Cowin Fuoco-Fisher, found guilty of murder, and James Caswell, found guilty of manslaughter, were sentenced for their involvement in the fatal incident that occurred on May 28 in Devonport Road, Stoke.
Fuoco-Fisher, 26, justified his actions by claiming self-defense, stating that he reacted to Mr. Shotton’s inappropriate behavior towards his girlfriend. Caswell, 29, was implicated in the assault after traces of Mr. Shotton’s blood were found on his shorts. Mr. Shotton succumbed to his injuries after being left unconscious and suffering from severe external injuries.
During the trial, it was revealed that Fuoco-Fisher had introduced Mr. Shotton to his girlfriend, Grace, who he considered a friend. An altercation ensued when Mr. Shotton made inappropriate advances towards Grace, leading to a series of violent confrontations between the two parties. The judge emphasized that the use of such excessive force was unwarranted and resulted in an unjustifiable loss of life.
Fuoco-Fisher and Caswell were observed collaborating in the assault, with Caswell serving as the “added muscle” behind the violent encounter. CCTV footage captured the men celebrating their actions with a fist bump, signaling a disturbing display of triumph after the fatal attack. The court recognized the devastating impact of the assault on Mr. Shotton’s family, highlighting the irreversible loss and grief caused by the senseless violence.
In his sentencing remarks, the judge acknowledged Fuoco-Fisher’s remorse and lack of prior convictions, ultimately imposing a life sentence with a minimum tariff of 16 years. Caswell, who displayed remorse but had previous convictions, received an eight-year sentence for manslaughter. The severity of their actions, coupled with the tragic outcome, underscored the importance of accountability in cases of extreme violence.
The senior investigating officer expressed satisfaction with the jury’s verdict, underscoring the catastrophic consequences of the assailants’ actions.
