Sydney, Australia — A local bridal designer has been awarded over $100,000 after enduring serious injuries in a dog attack that left her beloved pet requiring amputation. Mary Ioannidis, who was walking her 11-year-old shih tzu, Lexi, on a retractable lead, found herself in a harrowing situation when an aggressive dog, identified as a cross between a greyhound and Staffordshire bull terrier, lunged at them in Mortdale in April 2020.
As Ioannidis struggled to protect her dog, the attacking dog reportedly targeted both Lexi and her owner. “He kept coming back and launching at me… he just wouldn’t stop,” she recounted during her testimony at the NSW District Court. The brutal encounter resulted in Lexi suffering extensive injuries that necessitated the amputation of her front left leg at the shoulder.
In addition to the physical trauma sustained by Lexi, Ioannidis incurred lacerations to her neck, chin, and hands. She later faced a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a direct consequence of the incident. The court described the episode as a “violent and terrifying attack,” with Judge John Catsanos affirming that Ioannidis was directly harmed during the ordeal.
During the proceedings, Judge Catsanos ruled that the owner of the attacking dog, Melissa Carretero, was liable under the NSW Companion Animals Act. Consequently, Ioannidis was awarded a total of $101,788.63 for damages, in addition to legal fees.
While the court determined that certain costs associated with Lexi’s veterinary care and the emotional distress Ioannidis faced from witnessing the attack were not compensable under the Act, Judge Catsanos emphasized the interlinked nature of the traumatic events experienced by both Ioannidis and her pet. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about dog regulations and owner responsibilities in public spaces.
