Nanaimo, Canada – In a tragic turn of events, a disagreement between two individuals outside a casino in Nanaimo culminated in a fatal stabbing. The altercation unfolded after one of the individuals, Patterson, was denied entry into the casino for refusing to allow security personnel to search his bag. This rejection led to a series of events that ultimately resulted in the death of the other individual, Chiliakhov.
According to a Crown Counsel, Patterson and Chiliakhov crossed paths near a bank on Terminal Avenue before moving towards the Port Place Centre parking lot. Moments later, Chiliakhov was seen running towards the mall with a neck wound, while Patterson fled in the opposite direction. The victim collapsed inside the mall, seeking help from bystanders to call for emergency assistance.
Law enforcement responded promptly to the scene, with paramedics attempting life-saving measures in vain as Chiliakhov succumbed to his injuries at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. An autopsy confirmed that the victim’s death was caused by a deep gash to his neck, resulting in massive blood loss.
Patterson, who surrendered to authorities shortly after the incident, claimed that the stabbing was neither premeditated nor intentional. He admitted to using methamphetamine and alcohol leading up to the attack. The suspect asserted that the knife used in the assault was purchased as a tool rather than a weapon and expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he and the victim were friends.
Subsequent investigations revealed incriminating evidence in Patterson’s home and vehicle. Blood-stained items were recovered along with the knife utilized in the assault, thus solidifying the case against him. In court, Patterson offered a heartfelt apology to the victim’s family, acknowledging the harm caused by his actions. The court accepted a joint submission for Patterson’s penalty, which included a lengthy ban on weapon ownership and the requirement to provide a DNA sample.
Contrary to initial reports circulating on social media, authorities clarified that Chiliakhov was not employed as a security guard at the Port Place Shopping Centre. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences that can arise from unforeseen conflicts escalating into violence.
